Belly of the Whale
Perched amongst rocky outcrops and sandy coves The Belly of the Whale is surrounded by the tidal waters of the Bay of Fundy. This residence is composed of two distinct volumes separated by a conceptual “streamlet” and organizational strategy that divides the private spaces apart from a dramatic communal area known as the Belly of the Whale. Defined by its soaring wood ceiling reminiscent of a whale’s ribcage, this warm, light-filled living space embraces expansive ocean views and anchors the home’s architectural narrative. In contrast, the private volume recedes quietly into the surrounding forest, visually softening the building’s presence and allowing the landscape to remain the dominant feature.
Task
To deliver a home that met every functional need while allowing it to nestle gently into its rugged coastal site, never overpowering the landscape. By weaving the program around the poetic idea of the “belly of the whale,” Acre’s process of Storied Architecture transformed essential spaces into a sculptural, story-like experiences - one that balances intimacy and drama.
